The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a vast game reserve in Narok County, Kenya, adjoining with the Serengeti National Park in Mara Region, Tanzania. It is named in distinction of the Maasai people (the ancestral occupants of the region) and their depiction of the area when looked at from a remote place: “Mara”, which is Maa (Maasai dialect) for “detected,” an adept portrayal for the rings of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area. The area is internationally popular for its outstanding populace of lions, leopards and cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti National Park each year from July to October, regarded as the Great Migration.

Covering the area of 1.500 sq km, the Masai Mara has an abundance of game throughout the year but from June to October comes the climax for which the are is world famous: The Great Migration.

Considered to be the most awe-inspiring spectacle in the animal kingdom, millions of zebra and wildebeest cross the Mara River on their annual trek in search of new food resources. You can experience the Mara on game drives in open safari vehicles, wonder at it from the vantage of a hot air ballon or enjoy a guided nature walk with a Masai guide armed only with his spear.
